Author, actress and young widow Joanna Ross told her captivating story to an audience hosted by Nechama at the Nelson Mandela Auditorium followed by breakfast at Café Riteve on the morning of March 19th.

Joanna, who recently authored the fictional e-book, based on her own experience, entitled ‘Moving On,’ is a British woman who met and fell in love with a South African man she’d first met when he was studying in the UK.

They married and set up what looked to be an idyllic life together in Cape Town, soon having three children in four years, and, about to renovate their dream home, set off to England to celebrate their 40th birthdays together.

When her husband died suddenly of a stroke while they were over there, Joanna’s life changed dramatically, and she described in painful detail how she had to make significant decisions at the very time she was least equipped to do so.

She returned to Cape Town with her three young children, and tried to pick up the pieces of the life they had left behind. Eventually there came a time, as she sat weeping into a glass of red wine one evening, when she decided she wouldn’t let being the hopeless widow define her.  She realised that her husband dying was something she could not change, but that there were other things she could do to fill her life in order to make her a better mother for her children, and a nicer person to be around.

She joined an amateur acting group. She got out more. And she initiated a widow’s group when she discovered that support from others who are in the same boat is what really helps. These are the real events on which she’s based her fictional e-book ‘Moving On,’ and from which she hopes other people in similar situations can draw strength, and perhaps glean some ideas about how to manage better.

Joanna praised Nechama for providing the very support she feels is so necessary for the bereaved in the hours, weeks, months and years after the death of someone you love.

Each guest was given a muffin pan as a gift, generously sponsored by Addis, and among the fabulous prizes to be won in our lucky draw where kind donations by The Showroom and LuluBelle.  Thanks to Bags of Bites and CNC Products for their contributions towards the delicious breakfast and to Prime Fastener for the printing of invitations.  A special thanks as always to our Fundraising committee.
