Highlights at CJSA during 2011 included the fish braai in Sea Point, the 2011 Pesach vintage, the Goudini get-away, Ot Azey – the immersion course in Yiddish, the Hobbies & Crafts Fair, a special Milnerton twilight supper, the Men’s Schmooze Group and Art Classes.
Fish Braai in Sea Point
A delicious fish braai was hosted in Sea Point during February where 50 seniors enjoyed superbly barbequed Cape Salmon and mouth watering salads in our garden. What better way to spend a Cape Town summer’s evening, but in the company of friends and enjoying the fresh air .
Wine Making
Our band of dedicated wine makers caused a stir when they bottled 1360 bottles of delicious Kiddush and Pesach wine. The 2011 vintage was excellent and this was seen by the way in which the bottles flew out of the offices and we were sold out in just over one week. A great fundraiser and a way to actively involve our men.
Goudini Week
The warm waters of Goudini were the draw card for many of our members who enjoyed three nights away in the Worcester area. Forty members shared fellowship and also got to visit a winery and learn about the wonderful work done with deaf learners at De La Bat School.
Ot Azey
Our third annual Yiddish week for beginner and lovers of the Yiddish language was another highlight during the year. Our dedicated teachers prepared an interesting and diverse programme which created interest for members and non members as well. The group also enjoy special meals created in memory of Shtetl days.
Hobbies and Crafts Fair
Our first ever hobbies and craft fair was hosted at the Sea Point Civic Centre. Beautiful art work and crafts were displayed by our creative members as well as the public who were pleased to be part of this initiative. We also opened this day to creative people from Jewish Care Cape, which made this a good community initiative.
Twilight Supper with Raymond Ackerman
Our monthly twilight suppers at Milnerton are extremely popular, but the November supper exceeded all expectations when over 100 members booked for this successful evening . Raymond and Suzanne Ackerman, his daughter, enthralled everyone with their interesting anecdotes of the history of Pick ‘n Pay.
Schmooze Group
Our recent introduction of a Men’s Schmooze group once a month , on a Friday morning, in both Sea Point and Milnerton has been well accepted and attendance is steadily growing . Interesting guest speakers are a drawcard and the members enjoy the morning with a schnapps and snack after listening to the speaker.
Art Classes
A new innovation that has proven to be so popular at all branches has been the introduction of volunteer art teachers. Incredible work has been produced and members have enjoyed the challenges set by each teacher.
