Last year Jewish Care Cape invited Herzlia Learners to be our Spokespeople/Ambassadors on behalf of JCC Welfare Organisations to deliver reports at the 2011 AGM. This was an idea put forward as a way to have new and exciting input at last year’s AGM. And to encourage the youth to be more involved in Jewish welfare concerns and needs.

Herzlia Ambassadors Herzlia Senior Staff and
Geoff Cohen with Karen Cohen (Herzlia Counsellor) Sydney Samakofsky and Marianne Marks (all senior leadership at Herzlia) myself and Philip Todres, scripted a ‘procedural plan’ in order to implement this programme. We decided we would put it to the student council with an outline of how to proceed.
We decided on 2/3 learners per organisation to do a short apprenticeship at each of the seven Jewish Welfare Organisations amounting to 3 allocated visits.
In a meeting convened with all the role players, students, principal, counsellor, teacher, education director, Philip and myself, we had a lively meeting sharing plans for the task ahead.
This meeting was in July in preparation for the AGM in September. We suggested that they interview the Director or Programme Manager, write down their observations and impressions about the specific organisation. Interview a Resident or chat to (if appropriate) other staff members and finally document all data and information needed. We also encouraged them to include in their reports a special moment, an anecdote, an interaction with a resident. Reports also had to be no longer than one page. The photos describe the ease and joy with which students were willing to participate.
See next week’s page for how the plan unfolded. I will be bringing you the summary of each of the seven reports with pictures of each of the presenters………… These presentations were one of the highlights of last year’s AGM and I will also report on how they are progressing with their commitment to welfare work this year long after the presentation of last year’s.
